A typical, popular ‘ruin pub’ (one with a temporary permission in a city-centre block), operating since 2004 in a former garage deep inside the block. A DJ performs at a set-up created out of a ‘stretched Trabant’. You must have a look, and taste the hosszú lépés (‘long step’) – it’s the guests’ favourite drink: a mix of 10cl wine and 20cl soda water.

An imaginative concert hall, dance floor and restaurant on the River Danube. A great programme of Hungarian and foreign bands. The name derives from the ship which houses the complex, a Ukrainian Artemovsk stone-carrying barge: number 38 on the production line. A really unusual cultural adventure!

This latest party venue consists of no less than seven parts: the ‘220-year-old cellar restaurant’, the Puskás Pancho Sports Pub with live football broadcasts, café & lounge, Italian fusion restaurant, gallery & events hall, and garden. Appropriately named, it symbolises the renewal of Budapest. It was opened in 2008, in a grand Old Buda mansion from the late 1780s. Great, varied, meticulous design.

A small palazzo from 1912, facing one side of the National Museum – just the right size for a jazz club plus jazz café. There is a programme every night, Hungarian and foreign stars, emerging talents. Watch out for the ‘after 11 p.m.’ jam sessions, free of charge. On Sunday there are classical music concerts, and folk music most Wednesdays. Great pianos, (two – a Steinway and a Blüthner), and even greater personalities.
